Centenary of the WW1 Armistice

On Sunday 11 November2019 (Remembrance Sunday) we commemorated the centenary of the WW1 Armistice in music:

Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on Greensleeves

Ravel: Tzigane for violin and orchestra

Ravel was Vaughan Williams' teacher between 1907 and 1908. Both composers served in the Medical Corps driving ambulances in the First World War.

Arvo Pärt: Fratres (Brothers) for violin and strings

Folk and traditional music from many countries in the world currently affected by war and conflicts arranged for orchestra

With international violinist/soloist Virginie Robilliard who was a prize-winner at the Long-Thibaud International Violin Competition and the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.

The concert raised funds for the new St Mary's centre housing the Hackney Winter Night Shelter, Hackney Migrant Centre and Food Bank.

This event formed part of the St Mary's 'MUSIC FOR PEACE' weekend.
